RealCycler HSVT allows the detection of DNA from Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2) in clinical samples. HSV-1 is commonly associated with oral infections, such as cold sores, but can also cause encephalitis and other severe infections. HSV-2 is typically linked to genital infections and can cause painful ulcers and complications in the reproductive tract. Both types of herpesvirus can remain latent in the body and reactivate during times of stress or immunosuppression. Early detection is essential for appropriate treatment and the prevention of complications.
